The successful journey of a cinematographer from Northern France

From wedding videos to Multi-Awards winner and mentored by Joaquin Sedillo, ASC on the Fox hit show “9-1-1”

Los Angeles, California Aug 13, 2020 (Issuewire.com)  - Antoine Combelles was born and grew up in Northern France where he started his early career as a photographer in family portraiture, corporate and wedding photography while studying graphic design, animation and visual effects.

« I’m from a small town where living off your art and dreams is not a common thing to envision. »

Antoine’s talent and love for arts led him to work for local cultural events and he photographed international acts such as Deftones, Simple Plan, The Flaming Lips, Nada Surf, Franz Ferdinand, Angus & Julia Stone, St. Vincent, Bon Iver, Apocalyptica, GOOMH, just to name a few.

His work was exhibited in notable venues, selling some of his photography to individual buyers.

But Antoine had bigger dreams and felt stuck in this place.

« My dreams and my hope for something else started to vanish when in 2009, a visual effect company located in New York offered me an internship that turned out to be cancelled due to the recession. My frustration and my desire to travel grew on me, so I decided to take some time to reflect and I travelled to Australia for 8 months. »

Alone on the other side of the world, he had established a new plan and found his ultimate goal: back in France, his main focus was to direct music videos and his first short film and apply to the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts in New York City.

« I was more confident than ever. There was no way I wasn’t going to New York! I had worked so much for this.»

The second time’s a charm and Antoine spent the next 4 years in NYC.

His talent didn’t go unnoticed there. He photographed Trent Reznor’s band “How to Destroy Angels” amongst many others, and his work was featured on the front page of the “Washington Square News” journal several times.

Antoine developed his skills and unique style as a cinematographer. Amongst others, he collaborated with renowned director Patti Amoroso on her short film Lady Bug (she’s famous for being part of the Mamma Mia’s cast in Brazil) with Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical, Bombshell, Bill and Ted Face the Music); he also worked with Chloé Sarbib and Cléo Handler on their web series Young Like Us, featuring famous actor Brad Dourif (One Flew Over a Cuckoo’s Nest, Lord Of The Rings, Chucky...). He also worked closely with Yonatan Weinstein, recently nominated for Best Editing at the Ophir Awards (Israel Academy Awards) for Yaron Zilberman’s Incitement.

By then, Antoine also got involved in a diversity of projects such as music videos and TV shows.

In 2015 Antoine receives first recognition from his peers and is awarded an ARRI Volker Bahnemann Award for Cinematography, celebrating his body of work.

In the wake of this success, he is accepted into the cinematography workshop organized by the American Society of Cinematographer, where he's mentored by legendary Hollywood cinematographers like Stephen Burum, ASC (Intouchables, Mission Impossible), Caleb Deschanel, ASC (The Right Stuff, The Passion of the Christ, The Patriot) and Curtis Clark, ASC (The Draughtsman’s Contract, Alamo Bay).

« Being taught by the best was life-changing and Los Angeles was so inspiring I had to move there.

Moving to California doesn’t come without challenges, and I got lucky to start this new chapter being an intern for Academy-Award nominee Producer Andrew Lazar at his company Mad Chance (Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, Gil Junger’s 10 Things I Hate About You, George Clooney’s Confessions of A Dangerous Mind…). »

Antoine is quickly noticed in Hollywood and soon starts working on several projects as cinematographer for commercials, TV series, documentaries, short films… He was accepted to the cinematography program of the American Film Institute in 2017 and then was admitted to the prestigious Television Academy (Emmy Awards) mentorship program, which only selects one applicant amongst the thousands of cinematographers applying across the country.

Antoine Combelles has been mentored by Joaquin Sedillo, ASC on the Fox hit show “9-1-1”.

With all his experience and many achievements, this Frenchy has been living his American Dream all the way to Hollywood.

Over the last year, Antoine Combelles accomplished major works as a cinematographer and won several awards (Best Cinematography at the Canadian Cinematography Awards, the Los Angeles Cinematography Awards, the New York Cinematography Awards, Best film at Mindfield Film Festival and at the New York Movie Awards)

He also more recently worked with multi-award winner director Kruishoop and acclaimed camera operator Dave Fredericks (camera operator on “Sons of Anarchy”, Epix’s “Get Shorty”, FX’s “Mayans” or HBO’s “Westworld”).

Talent can’t be noticed without a lot of work. Antoine Combelles is a hard-working artist, essential to the present cinematographic industry.
