Toronto, Ontario Oct 10, 2018 (Issuewire.com) - Mayoral Candidate Saron Gebresellassi opposes Jennifer Keesmaat’s plan to work with developers to unlock city lands and re-purpose golf courses without consulting First Nations communities on how the land is to be used. First Nations communities must be consulted on the use of their traditional territory. In Toronto, these are the Huron-Wendat, the Anishinaabe, and the Mississaugas of the New Credit.
In the interest of true reconciliation, municipal land development projects must consult with First Nations Communities and not just its current occupants. This requirement is known as the “Duty to Consult” and is entrenched in constitutional law at federal and provincial levels of government. It is time to mirror this ‘duty to consult’ practice in municipal affairs.
