New York City, New York Jan 18, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - Dr. Puthenpura is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist currently serving patients at the Trumbull Pediatric Specialty Center in Trumbull, Connecticut, and at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. She treats a variety of conditions, but her personal area of interest is pediatric brain tumors. She seeks a strong connection with her patients and families.
“I love my patients and I’m really attached to them,” she says. “A cancer diagnosis is hard and one thing that can ease their mind is knowing that I am there for them through both the good and tough times. I find I do my best work when I am emotionally connected to what I do, and having that connection with children and their families is so rewarding” expressed Dr. Puthenpura.
Contemplating the thought of becoming an engineer, her volunteer experience at a pediatric cancer institute convinced her she wanted to be a doctor and work with kids. She completed medical school and her residency in pediatrics at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the Yale School of Medicine in 2021. She also holds a Master of Health Science degree (MHS) from the Yale School of Medicine.
Recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP), the doctor is board-certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.
Understanding the socio-economic and emotional burden of cancer therapy on her patients provides the impetus for her research, which is focused on identifying and addressing outcome and survival disparities in pediatric, adolescent, and young adult cancer patients due to race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic location.
Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends individuals be under pediatric care up to the age of 21. Pediatricians provide medical care to people ranging in age from newborns to young adults. They are trained to examine, diagnose, and treat children with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses through all of their developmental stages, as they grow and mature.
On a more personal note, Dr. Puthenpura is fluent in both English and Malayalam.
