Virtual Summer School: Not Your Parent’s Summer School

Summer school has changed quite a bit over the past decade. With virtual offerings, students have more opportunities than ever!

Milwaukee, Wisconsin Mar 4, 2019 (Issuewire.com)  - Summer school often has a negative connotation. Historically, summer school has been for students who are falling behind, struggling, and need extra help to graduate. Over the recent years, with the goal of providing more opportunities for all students, summer school has become a way for students to try new subjects, get ahead of high school requirements, explore new courses or career paths, and – yes – the option is still there to make up for failed credits. With the growth of virtual school offerings in Wisconsin, online summer school is a new way to take advantage of these opportunities.

For high school students, there are many requirements to graduate. For students who want to work ahead to open their schedule for sports, clubs, or other advanced courses, virtual summer school can provide those opportunities. At online schools such as Wisconsin Virtual Learning, students from any school district in Wisconsin can take free summer classes to get ahead or make up for failed classes.

“I enrolled my current Freshman in a summer school class for two main reasons. First, to see what a high school class was like and to see what expectations are at that level. Second, the class was not something that is offered by our school district. We both felt that she would learn a lot from this class. I’m so glad we did this. She was able to enter high school feeling prepared.” Kim Rohloff, parent of a Wisconsin Virtual Learning summer school student.

Since there is no cost associated for the student or the district, summer school gives students a great way to test out virtual education and see if it would be a good fit for their learning styles. Online courses aren’t any easier than traditional classes and certain traits such as organization and motivation are helpful for students to see success in a virtual environment.  “It really is a win-win for both the students and the districts. Students can gain a valuable summer learning experience at no cost to the school district.” Janel Mielke, Summer School Dean.

Online summer school isn’t just for high school students. There are enrichment offerings available to middle school students as well.
