Kennith Everett, (born August 15, 1994) known professionally as VNIS (pronounced veh·nuhs), is an American singer-songwriter from New York City, known for his singles "Young Visionary" and "W.A.I.H." These songs were released, on Aug 15, 2020, in conjunction as a unique 2-part single release. VNIS's debut EP "POV" was released on Nov 20, 2020, with the release of the Spanglish single "Ya No Estaré (No More)" and the acoustic track "Vibez on Vibez" has solidified an identifiable sound for the artist. VNIS is currently an independent artist.
Early Life
VNIS developed an interest in music at the age of 9 from his older brother's budding career as a rapper. At the time his brother would place a microphone in their childhood closet and rap the verses and have VNIS sing the hook or chorus. His mother moved often since retiring from the NYPD in her mid-thirties. Due to the frequent moves, VNIS found solace in the creative process of writing poetry and music. He found a community in music at his school, joining musical theater, show choir, and taking chorus every year.
Education
After graduating high school at 17, VNIS continued his education by moving to Savannah, GA and attending Savannah Technical College, in 2012, before transferring to Armstrong Atlantic State University, in 2013, and eventually transferring and finishing his Bachelor of Science in Communication at Kennesaw State University, in 2016. VNIS returned to school to pursue his Master's in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing in 2019 attending Monroe College in New Rochelle, NY. VNIS graduated in April of 2021.
Career
2016-2018
After spending significant time performing in the indie music scene in Atlanta and Savannah, GA, VNIS released his first project called "The Reason," on August 23, 2016. The project was described as a "Neosoulfolktronica" production and was written, produced, and recorded by VNIS. He explains that the project is "a love letter to all of the music that has inspired [him]."
Late in 2018, VNIS moved to Seoul, South Korea to live and take a break from music. It was during this period that he re-entered the music scene in Itaewon, performing with the local ex-pat community and releasing singles on Soundcloud written from his experiences while abroad.
2019-2020
Once VNIS returned back to the Atlanta music scene in 2020, he put together a management team and formed VNIS Music, LLC. to manage his branding and music. Under the management of his new team, VNIS released two singles in conjunction on Aug 15, 2020. The two singles "W.A.I.H." and "Young Visionary" both written and vocal produced by VNIS represent, "the dichotomy of who people think [he] should be as a POC artist and who [he] truly feels like inside."
When describing his sound, VNIS has stated, "I don't think there is anything confusing about me and my voice on a dance track and that being a dance song, many times people see your skin color and they put you in a box that doesn't fit. I don't think VNIS makes music that sits in one genre, I make music for the moments I experience and the rhythms I feel."
VNIS released his debut EP "POV" on Nov 20, 2020. VNIS states that "this project is a letter to self where I have bundled up all the stages of bad love I have gone through and penned it into a 7-track project. From "So Emotional" to "Vibez on Vibez" the project follows the ins and outs of moments I have gone through trying to stay in love even though love wasn't so kind to me."
