Veteran UK independent film producer, Richard Holmes (Gods Own Country, Eden Lake, Waking Ned), launches his lockdown-inspired invention on Kickstarter on 17 July 2023. Aimed at podcasters, voice actors, content creators, journalists, and those working from home making important calls or presentations, VoxBox makes it easy for anyone to achieve high quality sound.
Talking about his innovative product, Holmes says: “If you’ve ever had to build a duvet or sofa cushion-studio on your kitchen table; or found yourself in a wardrobe, balancing your laptop on your knees, or even just had to move rooms to sound more professional, then VoxBox is for you.”

Holmes noticed a trend of celebrities, journalists and voice actors sharing their improvised domestic recording “studios” on social media during lockdown. And, after much trial and error - including building D.I.Y recording booth solutions for his musician daughter - decided there had to be a better way. After making a couple of huge, heavy and foamy-smelling versions, the lightweight prototype for VoxBox emerged.
“When you’re done, you can take VoxBox down in five seconds and put it behind a door or under the bed. It’ll fit in the boot of a car too, if you ever find yourself needing to record away from home.”
Holmes hopes that his invention (that will retail at £299) will become the go-to solution for anyone that needs to sound professional but doesn’t want the disruption that using the duvet or taking apart the sofa can cause.
“I’ve now tested this with actors, podcasters, journalists and Work From Home-ers. It really works. I also demonstrated VoxBox to 200+ people at The Podcast Show in May. The response was identical, every time. They speak into the box and just say, “Wow.” It’s the universal reaction.” says Holmes.
