Video games are one of the most revolutionary inventions. They are amazing stress busters and also keep the mind sharp. But anything excessive is never good; playing video games for long hours everyday can mean that you have developed an unhealthy addiction to it. Instead of relieving you of stress, it causes more anxiety. It separates you from your friends and family, making you less approachable. You become less productive and waste all your energy and time neglecting the really important things in life. Like other addictions, it can also be overcome by following the below mentioned methods to get back to your normal life:
1. Try to cut down your gaming time
Video game addiction is not just a thing among children, but quite common among adults as well.
- While parents have the power to limit how many hours their children play these games, adults are in control of their own playing times. Thus they play how many hours they want at one go. Here is what you should do:
- Set a particular time limit for gaming every day. Try to stick by it when you play.
- Set a timer or alarm to remind you that playtime is over.
- There will be some days when you will be unable to fight off the temptation to play more. Do not lose hope if that happens. Follow the routine the next day.
2. Try lowering the number of your gaming systems
When you get to the point where you are addicted to video gaming, you must have spent a lot of time over it. The more stuff you have, the longer and more intense are your playing hours, thus eliminate them one by one. Make sure you have fewer gaming technologies so you do not get tempted by them.
3. Do not play video games in the bedroom
Your bedroom is the place where you relax after a long day. If you have gaming stuff in your bedroom, you will find it more convenient and play all night long. It will interrupt your sleep and other day-to-day tasks.
4. Install apps to block games
You can install game blocking applications on your phone to block your access to them. You have no choice but to stay refrained from gaming. These apps either limit your access to certain games or lock you out for a specific period of time. For computers, there are extensions that help you control your playtime.
5. Distract yourself
Whenever you feel like giving in to the temptation of playing video games, try to make yourself busy with tasks that will distract you. If you have or had a hobby, start doing it or just anything you enjoy or try something new and become more productive.
- Read a book, which will keep you occupied for hours.
- Go for a walk when you feel like gaming. Walking and spending time outdoor not only make you happy but keep you healthy as well.
- Go meet your friends and spend quality time with them. You can even discuss your addiction and receive useful tips from them.
- Start a new project; it will keep you busy on a regular basis.
6. Try real sports
Most people like to play sports video games, but instead of virtually playing them, you should play in real life to become physically active and healthy. You will also be able to see your friend regularly and make a new one along the way.
7. Ask for help from family and friends
When you find yourself with no control over your gaming habits, ask your close friends and family members to help.
- Ask them to remind you about your time limits if you forget.
- Tell them to respect your efforts and not entice you to play video games with them.
- Ask for their advice on how you can control your urges to play the games.
- Spend quality time with them and do fun activities together more.
8. Clinical help
If all the above-mentioned methods fail, you must go to a counselor immediately. Share your story and ask for their advice on the issue. Admitting you have an addiction problem is the first step to recovery.
